What is the Downside to Roman Shades?

Roman shades are a popular choice for their timeless look, versatility, and ability to add a touch of elegance to almost any room. But, as much as we love roman shades here at SelectBlinds, it’s also important to understand the few potential drawbacks they may present. If you’re considering roman shades for your home, here’s what you need to know before making a final decision.

Roman Shades Have Limited Light Control Options

Unlike blinds with adjustable slats, roman shades don’t offer the same flexibility when it comes to light control. You can’t tilt or partially open a roman shade to let in a specific amount of light. It’s either up or down, which means your light control is limited to the height of the shade.

While light-filtering roman shades can allow some natural light to seep in, if you need more customized light control, roman shades might not be the best option.

They Are Bulkier When Fully Raised

One characteristic of roman shades is that they stack up at the top of the window when fully open. This “stack” can take up a noticeable amount of space, potentially blocking part of your view.

Unlike roller shades that roll up compactly, roman shades require more room for that classic fabric fold. This is something to consider, especially if you have smaller windows and want a completely unobstructed view when your shades are open.

Roman Shades Often Have a Higher Price Point

Roman shades, especially custom roman shades, can be pricier compared to other window coverings like roller shades or mini blinds. Their unique construction and handcrafted style often come with a slightly higher price tag. So, if you’re on a tighter budget, you might want to consider other options.

Light-filtering roman shades are slightly more affordable because you can choose to leave them unlined or choose a free standard lining. Blackout roman shades come with a room-darkening liner that tends to cost more.

They Require Occasional Cleaning and Maintenance

Another downside to roman shades is that their beautiful fabric folds can also make them a bit more challenging to clean. Dust can settle into the folds, and stains can be harder to treat, particularly with lighter-colored fabrics.

If you need low-maintenance window treatments, you may find the upkeep on roman shades a bit more demanding compared to other styles like faux wood blinds.

Corded Options Might Not Be Ideal for Homes with Kids or Pets

Cordless roman shades are available and highly recommended for households with young children or pets, offering a safer alternative to lift systems. For even greater convenience, motorized roman shades provide effortless control at the touch of a button. Most Roman shades from SelectBlinds include a cordless lift option, so you can enjoy both style and peace of mind.

Should You Get Roman Shades?

It all comes down to your needs and preferences! Roman shades bring elegance, texture, and a sophisticated touch to any room. However, if you need precise light control, easy cleaning, or a lower price point, you may want to explore other options like faux wood blinds or roller shades.
