Stay ‘Cool’ in the Shade this Summer

Window coverings are primarily classified as either window shades or window blinds. There are other window coverings, such as curtains and shutters, but for the do-it-yourselfer, shades and blinds are the sweet spot.

Self-measuring and installing window shades and window blinds in no way detracts from the quality level, or from the options available in custom window coverings. SelectBlinds.com is an on-line only, direct to consumer, custom maker of window blinds and window shades. Select Blinds is unique, in that they sell only their brand. This is a good thing. SelectBlinds stands for quality, service, and value.

Summer is not quite here, but the good folks at SelectBlinds have recently rolled out their 2011 line of custom window shades, and the selection is impressive. Before getting in to the details, it’s worth mentioning my discussion with their VP, Nate Kennedy. When asked how best to describe the difference between a window shade and window blind, nimble footed Mr. Kennedy replied, “a window shade filters light, providing varying degrees of shade, including complete blackout, and a window blind, when in the closed position, completely blocks ones view.” Quite right.

Window shades for summer 2011 include cellular shades, Roman shades, bamboo and woven shades, pleated shades, roller shades, and sun control sheer shades. Cool colors and hot offers make the summer 2011 line up worth talking about.

First of all, as hard as it is to believe, on top of their current offering of 30% off all orders, plus free shipping, SelectBlinds is offering to everyone, from a selection of their most popular products, buy 3, and get the

4th free! I just couldn’t go further without mentioning that amazing saving opportunity on custom made window shades and window blinds.

Allow me to provide you with a brief definition of the different types of window shades.

Sheer shades: When in the opened position, sheer shades allow light and snooping eyes, to pass through the window. When closed, the fabric horizontal slats act like a window blind, blocking both light and prying eyes.

Roller shades: Spring loaded or with a continuous cord loop lift system, roller shades have just the two positions. Roller shades are either up, or they’re down. Your only choice is how far up or down the roller shade is.

Cellular shades: Honeycomb constructed material make up this extremely popular window shade. Cell shades are offered in single cell or double cell, and come in a variety of cell sizes. Honeycomb shades are also available with a multitude of custom options.

Pleated shades: These window shades look a lot like honeycomb shades, but pleated shades are a single layer of fabric while honeycomb shades are a double layer of fabric.

Bamboo/woven shades: Made from exotic materials, these are room transforming window shades.

Roman Shades: Fabric rich, Roman shades are the most drapery-like window shade available. Depending on the fold style selected, Roman shades’ fabric generously cascade down the window.
