How much light control do you want? What about privacy control?
To a degree, light control and privacy control are inversely correlated. For the maximum amount of light, consider an unlined window covering. The fabrics tend to be more translucent; or for woven wood shades, there may be natural separations in the design. This option would provide the least amount of privacy, even with the shade fully down. Ordering samples is the best way to see what the product looks like unlined.
