Is Drapery the Same as Curtains?

You may have heard people use “curtains” and “draperies” interchangeably, but are they really the same? While both serve to cover windows and provide privacy and softness, what are draperies (or drapes) and curtains differ in several key ways. From fabric type to installation, let’s explore similar and distinct characteristics, so you can choose the best window treatments for your space.

Fabric & Construction

The main difference lies in the fabric type material and construction. Curtains are typically made from lighter fabric panels such as cotton or polyester blends. They focus on filtering natural light and providing casual style.

Draperies, however, use heavier, lined fabrics — think velvet, jacquard, or blackout linen. Drapery tends to be ordered floor-length, pleated, and engineered for fullness and opacity. Their weight and construction make them superb at providing privacy, light control, and thermal benefits.

Light Control & Privacy

Because drapes use thick, often-lined fabric panels, they deliver stronger results in light blocking and insulation vs curtains. If you want full darkness in a bedroom, or to reduce glare in a home theater, drapes are the better choice for these benefits. They also are better at dampening sound and insulating windows.

Curtains, by contrast, provide gentler light control and privacy. Light-filtering versions offer subdued brightness, while privacy-lined styles offer increased coverage without fully blocking out daylight.
