The importance of having a productive workspace at home has increased over the last few years. Lighting plays an important role, which means it matters which window covering you choose to install. How can you make sure you’re getting the best one for your space?
In this blog post, we’ll go over what to consider when choosing window coverings for a home office as well as some of our current recommendations!
4 Questions to Ask When Choosing Office Window Coverings
In general, light-filtering window shades are great for home offices. Natural light has several benefits, including increasing productivity, and light-filtering shades softly diffuse it while blocking harmful UV rays.
Because there are so many options, it’s important to think through what features are needed to improve your space. Here are some basic questions to help narrow down your choice.
1) Does your room get overly cold or hot throughout the year?
If so, consider adding a layer of insulation with energy-efficient window treatments, so you can work comfortably all year long. If not, then you don’t necessarily need to get cellular shades or add a liner to your shades.
2) Are your windows hard to reach?
Motorized window coverings would be your best option for windows that are hard to reach. If they’re high and you won’t be able to access a motorized wand, choose a motorized shade that has a remote control or can use the SelectConnect Bridge.

3) Does the sun hit your desk / computer currently?
Solar shades are a great option because they help reduce the glare hitting your screen. If you go with a roman shade or woven wood shade, you may want to add a liner still to diffuse the light, even if you don’t need the energy-efficiency benefits.
4) Do you work better in the dark?
This goes against what we said earlier about natural light, but some roles, like video editors, need to see every detail on their screen. Any light will affect their work. You can either reduce incoming light with room darkening shades and use artificial lighting when you need the room lit.
Or choose normal light-filtering blinds or shades and add drapery over them. Then you’ll adjust your light control by opening or closing the drapes. (Pro Tip: Use the Wrap Around Adjustable Curtain Rods to hang the drapes closer to the wall and minimize more light.)

Premier Modern Natural Wood Shades
Nature has been shown to help relieve stress, and woven wood shades are made from all natural elements like jute, bamboo and grass. These shades come unlined, or for more light control and privacy, you can add a privacy or blackout liner. This gorgeous office, as featured on HGTV’s #MarriedToRealEstate, invites warm neutrals into the space with Premier Modern Natural Wood Shades.

Classic Sheer Weave Solars
Classic Sheer Weave Solars allow an outside view even when they’re completely lowered, thanks to its openness percentage. These shades come in 1, 3, 5, 10 and 14%. The higher the percentage, the looser the weave of the fabric, so more light comes through. You’ll also have a clearer view to the outdoors. Choose a low openness percentage to decrease the amount of incoming light and reduce glare on your computer screen.

2″ Select Basswood Wood Blinds
2” Select Basswood Wood Blinds are a natural choice for any space in your place. Its slats allow you to adjust the amount of incoming light without having to raise the shade all the way. The color-coordinated headrail and wand adds a streamlined, designer finish to the room.
Available in gorgeous wood stains and painted lacquer finishes, these blinds are treated with a protective UV coating to prevent fading. Keep them looking like new for years with a light dusting or damp cloth.
