How to Choose the Right Types of Curtains for Your Home

Curtains and drapery are more than just a way to block out light — they’re a style statement! They add warmth, texture, and personality to any room. But with so many options, how do you choose the right types of curtains for your home? Here’s a quick guide to help you find the perfect fit for your space.

1. Start with Functionality

Before diving into fabrics and patterns, ask yourself what you need your curtains or drapery to do. Do you want to block out light in the bedroom? Opt for blackout curtains. Need a little privacy in the living room but still want some natural light? Sheer curtains could be your best bet. Knowing the desired amount of light control helps narrow down your fabric options.

Liners are another way to achieve your goal. If you like the color of a curtain but it’s too lightweight, check to see if it offers a standard liner to increase your privacy but still allow light to glow through. Or you can block out light with a blackout curtains.

2. Match Curtains to Your Room’s Style

Your home’s aesthetic plays a big role in curtain selection. Here’s our recommendation for drapery based on different interior styles:

Modern and Minimalist Interiors

Clean lines and neutral tones are key here. Opt for light, airy fabrics like linen or cotton in shades of white, gray, or soft pastels. Grommet-top curtains are perfect for a sleek, modern look.

Boho or Eclectic Interiors

For a more relaxed vibe, flowy, sheer curtains in earthy tones or vibrant patterns work beautifully. Layering drapery with woven wood shades also creates that free-spirited, bohemian feel.

If you’re looking to balance out your eclectic interior, then lean toward natural-toned curtains to complement the colors and patterns elsewhere in the room.

Traditional and Classic Interiors

For an air of elegance, go for heavier fabrics, like velvet. The thicker fabric brings a luxurious, formal touch to living rooms or dining rooms. Rich colors like deep reds, navy, or charcoal pair perfectly with traditional wooden furniture and detailed moldings.

Farmhouse or Rustic Interiors

Linen curtains in natural tones like beige, cream, or sage green can complete a cozy farmhouse look. Try tie-back styles for a more laid-back, country vibe. This style pairs especially well with wooden beams and shiplap walls.

3. Measure for the Perfect Fit

Lastly, don’t underestimate the importance of proper measurements. Curtains that are too short or too narrow can throw off the entire room’s look. Our Measuring Guide addresses how to measure for both pleated curtains and grommet curtains.

If you plan on opening these curtains a lot, a “trouser break” where they are barely touching the floor is the best option. But if you’re going for a more formal look and won’t be opening them, then consider “puddling” the fabric on the floor.
