How to Clean Roman Shades

Tips to keep your roman shades clean

Romans are a unique style of window covering that uses a variety of materials and offers two fold styles. All of this combined gives romans the elegance of drapery with the modern functionality of window shades.

1. Vacuum Brush Attachment

Because of that, cleaning roman shades should resemble the way you clean draperies and/or curtains. I happen to have several romans in my home, and I use the oblong brush attachment for the vacuum.

This process should take place while the shades are in the lowered position, giving you access to all of the material that is exposed on a regular basis. Once it is lowered, the fun begins. It’s really quite simple. Start with the fold section closest to the top, and gently vacuum the material in a downward direction. For the best look, continue across that fold by using the same downward motion. By doing so, the material will be consistent in the way that the fibers lay. Otherwise, you face the risk of the material looking like a freshly cut lawn. You know what I mean. One stroke lays the nap down, and the adjacent section will fluff it up. Just like on a rug.

The wider the oblong vacuum attachment, the easier and quicker the chore!

2. Spot Clean

If you need to spot clean, use a slightly damp cloth and use very mild detergent or even soap. Never rub the fabric. Instead, only dab at the spots. This will keep the fabric looking new, bright, and clean.

3. Regular Cleaning

The best thing you can do for your romans is to clean or dust them regularly. And because it’s so simple to do, your shade will stay looking great even longer.
