5 Types of Curtains for 5 Different Lighting Feels

Lighting is everything for an interior design. Some homeowners are ever on the lookout for ways to maximize the incoming natural light. Others actively work at blocking out light. Most are looking for an optimal combination of the two extremes.  Go with a brighter, friendlier lighting effect? Or maybe with a darker, more dramatic one, with increased privacy. Blocking out light also helps keep out harmful UV rays that can damage and discolor furniture. Maybe they just want to keep the light out so they can sleep in or take a midday nap.  No matter what you might be after, the way you manage light in a space can help set specific moods.

That’s Why We Call It “Mood Lighting”

The biggest indicator of light control from your windows is the weight and texture of your window treatments. Using different types of curtains will help you maximize control over your natural interior light, and thus, more control over the mood inside your space.

Get Better Light Control Indoors

Think of degrees of light allowance for different lighting effects: Sheer, light filtering, room darkening, blackout, and layering for even greater light control.

  1. Sheer Curtain Effect
Sheer curtains and shades allow plenty of glowing, natural light into your space, while still maintaining some degree of privacy. Light colors (esp neutral white) and lighter fabrics are the best options for a sheer curtain lighting effect.
  1. Light-Filtering Effect
Sheer curtains and shades gently diffuse natural light coming through your windows. You can maintain that beautiful daylight, but light-filtering window treatments will add a warm, soft glow to your space all throughout the day. Good degree of privacy, too.

For curtains, buying them without any kind of liner will offer you a nice light-filtering effect. Keep in mind that the darker your curtain color will give you less light filtering and more into a room darkening effect.
  1. Room Darkening Effect

For a darker room darkening effect and mood, darker unlined curtains or lighter curtains with a privacy liner will likely get you the degree of light blockage you need, without going full blackout effect.

There are also shades crafted with just the right amount of thickness and texture to achieve solid room darkening.
  1. Blackout Effect
Blackout curtains and shades can block up to 99 percent of incoming light. For curtains, even if you have lighter colored curtains, you can always get a heavier blackout liner.

Blackout curtains are an excellent solution for movie night, and for bedrooms and nurseries. Naptime, sleeping in on the weekends, ideal privacy … all covered!
  1. Layered Curtain Effect
You can layer curtains over sheer curtains and other window treatments, to give you a splendid light-filtering effect, added dimension, and a pro designer look.

For example, you might want to go with heavier drapes layered over sheer curtain panels or over sheer shades. When you want more natural light, simply pull back the thicker drapes to allow the sheer material to filter more light in. For a darker room effect, just close the overlying drapes. You might need to be aware of giving your curtains enough weight support with the right rod hardware.
